Sex Selective Abortions and Gender Balance
نویسنده
چکیده
We examine the implications of parental choice regarding the gender of their child in a context where boys are valued more than girls. In the absence of a bride price system, parental choice may reduce gender bias, but has an adverse e¤ect on welfare since it results in a sex ratio that is biased against girls. Bride prices can ensure e¢ cient outcomes with a balanced sex ratio if markets are Walrasian. However, if the marriage market is subject to frictions, the equilibrium sex ratio will be unbalanced and ine¢ cient.

BACKGROUND India's 2011 census revealed a growing imbalance between the numbers of girls and boys aged 0-6 years, which we postulate is due to increased prenatal sex determination with subsequent selective abortion of female fetuses. We aimed to establish the trends in sex ratio by birth order from 1990 to 2005 with three nationally representative surveys and to quantify the totals of selective...

Using data from the NFHS-3 this paper first finds out that sex ratios for firstborns in Delhi, Punjab and Rajasthan do have sign...
